It is surprising the number of companies that are reactive instead of proactive in their database administration and management.  Many problems are not diagnosed until there has been a significant slowdown or downtime in data retrieval.  Even if your database is stable or your administration tasks are are relatively small, Waltech can help you.  Without a regular health check you may never know what problems could be developing.

Waltech's expert DBA's are available to preform a complete performance assessment for our client's databases.  We review over 50 different areas and deliver you a full report with a list of action items for you or your team to implement.  Best of all it is fast and affordable.

Visit our Oracle or SQL pages for more info on our Database Health Checks.

How (not) to get ripped off using Remote DBA

There are a number of companies that will provide Remote DBA Services but be careful who you contract with.  These companies will offer what appears to be a fair rate but if you scratch below the surface it may not be all that it seems.

The method I am describing is to start with a low monthly rate for monitoring your database.  This price, however, includes little actual DBA work.  If something goes wrong they will be very happy to let you know exactly how to fix it, as well as the additional charge.   Throw in an upgrade or a migration and your low monthly rate can approach the price of a full-time DBA.  This also makes budgeting difficult as your DBA costs can fluctuate greatly from month to month.

At Waltech we realize that every client has vastly different technology.  Your DBA provider must fully understand not only what systems you have in place but also what your future plans are as well.  We make every attempt to agree on how to handle, and the cost of, additional work when the original contract is signed.  It is one of the ways Waltech is your Information Technology Partner.

Beware of companies that offer you a quick monthly rate.  Be sure to check exactly what services are included and the fees for what is not.  It could end up costing you.

Waltech is pleased to announce that we have officially expanded our line of Managed Services to include Desktop, Server, and Backup and Disaster Recovery (BDR).  Combined with our existing lines of Remote DBA and IT Consulting, Waltech truly is your Information Technology Partner.

Server and Desktop Support  - These plans will include access to our software monitoring platform, anti virus and spy ware removal, as well as security patch and operating system updates.  Premium levels of support will add the ability to generate service tickets for resolution by our data center technicians, and even dial-in access to our US based Help Desk for immediate resolution of problems.  This is a great solution for company's that want to balance the need for end user support without overloading their IT staff, especially with problems that can be easily corrected.

Backup and Disaster Recovery (BDR) - Our BDR solution is a fully managed service allowing our clients to efficiently backup and restore their data in the event of an emergency.  All you need to do is install our NAS Device into your LAN and we take care of the rest.  Backups will be kept on the NAS and can also be compressed, encrypted, and transmitted to 2 separate data centers in the US for safe keeping.  If the unthinkable happens, we will re-image a new NAS and overnight it to you.

Why use a Remote DBA Service?

Stable, well-maintained databases have become essential to almost every business.  Keeping those environments running smoothly, however, is expensive and sometimes forces a company to lose sight on its core business.  This is especially true for company's whose main focus is not within an IT related field.

Database technology is becoming increasingly complex and in turn, DBA's that are up to the task are more and more difficult to find.  Many companies are finding it necessary to use recruiting firms to locate these types of professionals.  After paying recruitment fees, salary, and benefits many companies will have to spend over $150,000 or more just to employ one DBA for a single year.  Finally, once you have your new DBA up to speed, there are annual training costs to keep them current on the latest technologies and schools of thought for your particular system.

Waltech has a better solution.

With remote DBA Service from Waltech these concerns (and expenditures) are a thing of the past.  Please visit our Getting Started page for more info and to request a free quote on our Remote DBA Service.

Waltech has been in business for 12 years and started by providing IT Consulting and Staffing services. Currently we have contractors working for clients all over the US.

More recently we have expanded our product line to include managed database services, also known as Remote DBA. We specialize in monitoring and maintaining Oracle and Microsoft SQL Server databases using a program that we have developed in house. Our Remote DBA service can save our clients thousands of dollars in maintenance costs and also allow them to focus more of their attention on their core business. In the near future we would like to add network and desktop support to our line of managed services.

Waltech is based in Marlborough, MA and also has a location in Bangalore, India.
